Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
